Photography for Ancillary

I took a range of images for the ancillary task, some of my fellow group who helped to construct the music video also used these, but also took some of their own.

Risk Assesment

Risk

Who is at risk and how?

Prevention

Fire

Actors and filming crew. If a fire was to break out, injury could be caused or even fatality.
The school has fire alarms, break-glass and sprinklers already in place. Everyone should know the correct fire procedures in advance.

Rooftop
Actors and filming crew. Due to the height of the rooftop people can fall which would end to them being seriously hurt.
Everyone should be made aware of the fact that the rooftop is dangerous and no one should be allowed near the edge of the rooftop.

Equipment
Actors and film crew could easily trip over filming equipment and props.
All equipment not in use should be placed to one side away from anyone.

Copyright Music - Contacting The Record Label

Using a copyright product is illegal without permission, so in order to use the song Teenage Dirtbag - Wheatus, in it's original state, we had to contact the record label that owns the song to ask their permission to use this song for educational purposes.

This is the letter we sent them.
Consent to use copyright material

Unfortunately we didn't hear back from the record label.

Band Name Survey

In our group we decided on a range of different band names, we let out target audience decide on the name we were going to use. We decide to let our target audience decide as these are the people we want to promote the song to, and if they like the band name they are more likely to listen to it.

The survey shows that the most popular name choice for the band is 'The Racoons' This is what the band will be called. The video being released, therefore, is for the single 'The Racoons - Teenage Dirtbag'.

Band Members

BECKY: guitarist

AIMEE: drummer, guitarist and GIRL

BEN: Guitarist and BOY

All of our band members will be wearing casual/rock costumes. This is to reflect the nature of the chosen song by to also bring the band together.

Draft Layouts for Poster

With this layout I have made the image and the band name the main aspects to the poster. I feel that these are the things that will mainly draw the people's attention to the poster, as if people know the band name or the picture they are more likely to stop and read the smaller writing. Next in priority I have put the top singles slightly smaller but still quite dominant, this is because people are more likely to of heard a single song in the charts, that an album name that isn't yet released but due for release. Finally the album name is the smallest thing, this isn't because it's less important than the other aspects, but purely because the others are more likely to get passer-by's attention.

For this layout i have mixed up the order a tiny bit. I thought that it would be unique to have the band name running up the page, this would look different and hopefully catch peoples attention. I have left the image as the main focus, because people are likely to recognise the group that way. Again top singles is quite dominant, for the same reason as above. I have give the album name the top of the page this time, because it is the first place people will look.

Draft Layouts for Album Cover

This is the first draft layout for an album cover. The image covers the main section of the page, with the band name being second in dominance. I feel that these are the two main aspects of the CD cover so therefore have made them very large. The Album name is slightly smaller but still of importance, this is situated below the Band Name. Smaller details have no set place, as they may look  better in different areas depending on the image used.

This design is similar to the previous, but the Band Name is above the Album Name.

Colour Scheme Ideas for ancillary

Black and white and simple colours and they will contrast well with anything, they can also be edited to look very good for an album cover. For example, they can be used for shadowing very well. With use of black and white, any colours from images used will be very clear, which will emphasise these.

The black and white contrast well together and the pink just adds a little more brightness into the colour scheme. However pink may not match well with many colours that images may add.

The colours green orange and blue are not the best combination to use. They do not match particularly well and would make products look like children had made them as that do not have a mature look about them.

The white and the blue of this selection of colours are very vibrant however, the red is a little dull, maybe looking a little more like a brown in some lights. This would not make the product look appealing at all and therefore will not be a colour scheme I will debate using.

The yellow and the purple both add a sense of fun to this colour scheme, however it may not work well with all images. The colours work well together but with added colour from images they may look too overwhelming.

From this colour scheme research I can conclude that the majority of my products will be made in black and white, with colour being added from the colours in the images I use. This will provide a more sophisticated and professional look.

Font Ideas For ancillary

This font is a interesting font because of the different thicknesses in the letters, it gives variation to the font. It is an ideal font for titles of albums because it is bold and easy to read, it stands out really well.

The 'THE' of this font stands out really well because of how bold it is and the size of it, however the 'RACOONS' doesn't stand out as much because it is hidden due to the size and boldness of the 'THE'. I don't think that this font would be suitable for an album cover because the attention from the readers would be focused on the 'THE' instead of the rest of the album cover.

This font adds more colour to plain black colour in the font and its surroundings, it is appealing but if you wanted to change the colours of the album colour, this font would not really be suitable because the colours would clash. The dots around the edge and the stripes in the letters go well together.

This font is similar to a previous one, the 'THE' will receive a lot of attention, too much attention compared to the 'RACOONS'. The difference between the font styles one 'THE' and 'RACOONS' is too great, they seem out of place with each other. I do not think that this font still be suitable for an album cover.

This font seems old fashioned, as if it was from a silent film. It would not suit a up beat style of music for an album cover. This font would not really stand out against darker colours that could be used for the background of an album.

This font is similar in a way to some of the others by the way that the 'THE' stands out much more than the 'RACOONS'. This font is different to the rest because of how curvy the 'THE' is, it gives it its own unique style. I still don't think that this font would be suitable for an album cover, it would look better if the words were the same size.

Concept Ideas for Main Task

Some of the video concept ideas we have watched. We have considered the main features of each video for influence in our own production, and below are the ideas we discussed.

1) LMFAO - sexy and I know itOur ideas: young babies, children, adults and elderly dancing. Babies doing the 'wiggle'.

2) Wheatus - Teenage dirtbagBig school party; teachers, cleaners, and all school ages. Band playing.

3)Nickelback - rockstar Direct address/different people to sing lyrics.

4)Katy Perry - TGIF House Party.

We have decided to make a music video for 'Teenage Dirtbag'.

Lyrics
Her name is Noelle
I have a dream about her
she rings my bell
I got gym class in half an hour
Oh how she rocks
In Keds and tube socks
But she doesn't know who I am
And she doesn't give a damn about me

Cause I'm just a teenage dirtbag baby
Yeah I'm just a teenage dirtbag baby
Listen to Iron Maiden baby with me
Ooohoooooo

Her boyfriend's a dick
he brings a gun to school
And he'd simply kick
My ass if he knew the truth
He lives on my block and
He drives an IROC
But he doesn't know who I am
And he doesn't give a damn about me...

Cause i'm just a teenage dirtbag baby
Yeah i'm just a teenage dirtbag baby
listen to Iron Maiden baby with me
Ooohoooooo

Oh yeah, dirtbag
No, she doesn't know what she's missing.
Oh yeah, dirtbag
No, she doesn't know what she's missing.

Man I feel like mold
It's prom night and I am lonely.
Lo and beholdshe's walking over to me.
This must be fake
My lip starts to shake
How does she know who I am?
And why does she give a damn about me?

(and she said)
I've got two tickets to Iron Maiden baby
Come with me Friday - don't say maybe.
I'm just a teenage dirtbag baby like youOoohoo Hoo Hooooooo

Oh yeah, dirtbag
No, she doesn't know what she's missing.
Oh yeah, dirtbag
No, she doesn't know what she's missing...
YYYYEEEEEEEEEHHHHHH

Summary of Research

Analysis':
From the music video analysis' I have pulled out the conventions that make a music video successful, and what makes the ancillary products to go with it help to market the song and therefore sell the CD's. I have listed the conventions of each, and will be using some of these but also be challenging some of them in the construction of my video.

Survey:
From my survey I found out exactly what my target market wanted from their viewing of a music video, and their preferences. In the construction of my video I will be making sure I stick to this extremely closely as I want to produce a video that my target audience want to watch over and over again, and one that they would recomment to peers.

Focus Group:
I asked a small group of people some questions on a CD cover and a music video. I asked them what worked well/not so well and why, what could be improve and if they would buy the album, I feel that these questions and the answers helped me to gain a sound knowledge of the specific things that my target audience like and I can now work closely with this to ensure I make a video that works well. The focus group allowed my to realise just how high the expectations of a music video and it relating products were.

Institutions

Stereophonics - Word Gets Around

What stands out the most on the cover?
- The bright colours are what stands out to me the most. The use of primary colours with black and white gives a very eye-catching appeal.
- The images on the cover, of face parts is what stands out. Also the sign language pictures. I like the use of these.

What do you not like about the cover?
- The album looks like a childs piece of artwork.
- It's quite busy.

Would you buy this album if you saw it in a shop?
- because the colours are quite bright it would catch my eye, therefore I would probably pick it up in the shop.

Focus Group

Stereophonics - Dakota

What do you like about the music video and why?
- The costumes work well with the age of the video and the type of music it is, this makes the video more realistic.
- I like the editing of the film, it makes it more exciting. It fits in very well with the lyrics. I also like the use of characters, the man singing the lyrics, and a woman is used to show he is talking about her, later in the video they are seen together.
- The bits with the band are a good way of showing different aspects to the video, they show the types of instruments used in the music and really help to bring the video alive.

What could be improved?
- All of the editing is quite fast paced, it would be nice to see some of it slower and with less transitions to be able to actually see the band more.

Would you buy the album? Why/Why not?
- Yes, the song is catchy and would appeal to me, I like this kind of music.
- The album would be worth listening to.
- Maybe.

Target Audience Survey

Create your free online surveys with SurveyMonkey, the world's leading questionnaire tool.

The main age that took my survey were 16-19 year olds. These are the people that tend to watch music channels and therefore are the people we will be aiming to please.  At this age, friends influence what an individual watches and therefore if the video appeals to some people, other people will watch it due to their friends talking about it, hence why I need to impress a wide audience.

70% of the people that took my survey were female, this means that this data is more reliable for females rather than males. However there were males take the survey and therefore both sex's have had an input. I am going to be aiming my product at both genders as I feel that music videos should have a very wide audience, and with imput from both males and females I feel I can achieve this.

All of the people surveyed watch music videos, meaning they will know what the expect from a music video and what they would like to see from them. Because they all watch music videos, it makes the feedback from this survey very reliable as I will know exactly what people who watch music videos look for.

The majority of the people who took my survey regularly watch music videos. This means they are a relatable topic to my target audience. I asked this question as I feel that information from people who watch music videos more regularly would be more helpful as I want my music video to be watch a lot and this will be helpful.

1-3 minutes is the preferred song length. We will be taking this into account by choosing a song length of around 3 minutes, but compromising to around 4 minutes if necessary.  I feel that having a suitable length music video is key, as you do not want people to get bored of what they are watching and switch off as soon as they see a video as they know that it 'drags' on.

The main music channels watched are 4music and VIVA, both of these channels play a range of different music but mainly focus on the latest tracks and the UK top 40. I will be chosing a song that has been in the UK top 40, but not necessarily recently.

My target market look for good catching lyrics, dancing and costumes mainly. This will all be taken into consideration in the planning and production of the video.

Conventions

From my previous analysis' of videos I can see that for a video to be successful it needs to fulfill its purpose of promoting a single. To make it successful it need to attract to the target audience and make people want to download or buy the single.

A typical music video consists of many conventions that each in turn help to promote the song. These include 1. Appearances from the artist/band, this helps to create an iconic appeal, so people instantly know exactly who the artist is. 2. If the video is relevant to the lyrics, the video makes much more sense and therefore makes it more suitable for the audience to understand the story behind the video. 3. Costumes and make-up are different in every type of video, from extreme to everyday, this helps to set the scene and help portray the story of the video better. 4. Many videos have dance routines in, but not all. Dancing can sometimes improve the quality of the video.

There are no rights and wrongs in a music video, most of the set up is down to the iconic style of an individual artist (such as Lady Gaga's outrageous style). In different genres there are different style, but music videos need to be diverse. The style of a good music video is down to individual taste.

A typical album cover consists of a main image, this is usually of the band/artist, or an iconic image that the audience will know which artist/band it relates to, again this helps build a strong portrayal. Secondly, a album cover always has the band/artists name on it, bands/artists usually use one font on all of their products to keep it professional, consistent and recognisable.  In a smaller font, the name of the album is also present, this is to let the audience know which album it is, as there may be many. Finally, the use of a colour scheme is very important, to create a professional look

A typical poster consists of similar conventions to the CD cover. Everything is the same, but there are some added extra's. For a tour poster, tour dates and supporting acts are also included, this is to make the audience even more enticed to go and see the tour. For a CD release poster, comments from magazines and newspapers may be present.

Tinie Tempah Poster Anaylsis

This poster is a very stereotypical poster to advertise a tour, with clear sections. These sections include, the artists name, an image, tour dates and venues, supporting acts and small print. Whilst following the route of the eye, the first thing we see is the artists name, which has the name of the tour beneath it. If we carry on following this the next thing the eye meets is an image of the artist, following the tour dates and venues. In on of the hotspots there is a small list of some of the supporting acts.
There is a colour scheme that runs through the poster, and that is black, light powder blue and white. The main background is black, with the text in white and light powder blue.
The image on the poster is an image of the artist, it is a very dark contrasted picture, which fits in well with the whole colour scheme of the poster.
The text for the tour dates and venues is a basic font, this means it is very easy to read and therefore people will not have to properly study the poster they will be able to glance at it and find the date/venue they are looking for very quickly. The other fonts used on the poster are fonts that are used as logo's for the artists, for example the font that Tinie Tempah is written in is used on his album cover and other products.

Miami 2 Ibiza - Single Cover Analysis

The layout is very simple. It is purely made up of words and a plain background. The text is central on the page with one word per line.
The colour scheme consists of four colours, white, blue, yellow and pink. The majority of the words are in blue and the background is white which allow the text to clearly stand out. The '2' from 'Miami 2 Ibiza' is in yellow and pink blocks when it runs through either the white or the blue. This allows the '2' to stand out from the rest of the text.
The font used is very simplistic and basic font, using straight lines and nothing else. The font looks very traditional but is very easy to read for all different ages and people.
There is no use of image on this CD cover, the words and font are the only detailing on the cover and it relies on these and these only to sell the cover. This suggests that there is a very large fan base and there is no need to go over the top to sell the single.

Miami 2 Ibiza - Video Analysis

Miami to Ibiza is a single aimed at a young target audience; this song would be played at a club or a party and therefore has a strong beat. Mise-en-scene, sound, editing and camerawork are used very clearly throughout the video to create an interesting video that would appeal to the correct target audience.

Sound is used a great deal in this video to make it relevant to its audience. In the opening scene, ambient sounds such as the sounds of aeroplanes, suitcases being pulled along and people talking are used to create the atmosphere of an airport. This relates to the youngsters of today as they go away on breaks with friends and have a good time. The non-diegetic music throughout the song has a strong beat, and in sections becomes very ‘clubby’ this is the type of music youngsters would dance to in clubs on their holidays, linking to the first set of noises with the airport. In the video you also hear a lot of diegetic sounds, such as someone jumping in the sea, people laughing and screaming and generally having a good time, which is what the target audience will be interested in. The suggested audience is teenagers/young adults, because of the use of shortened words; this is also my target market. Another example which secures this suggestion is ‘black BM' and 'white TT’ again for the same reasons.

Mise-en-scene closely relates to the target audience. Different props and costumes are used to set the different locations and settings. An example of this is the use of glasses, bottles, shot glasses, and skimpy outfits in the clubs. When young people are out when on holiday, it is stereotypical that when in clubs, they wear small outfits, have a drink and have a good time. This is the point where the girls are wearing the most make-up to show their femininity. In the clubs the lighting is low key, with a few strobe lights. A different location is at the beginning of the video, at the airport. The young girl is wearing a longer dress; the props of a hat, sunglasses and a suitcase are used to show that she has just arrived at her holiday destination. This also links to the youth of today as when youngsters are travelling they would be wearing something that would be more suitable and they would have their luggage with them. A final location is on the beach, as expected the girl is wearing a bikini, this shows she is young as youngsters wear bikinis whereas older ladies would wear a swimsuit as they would possibly feel more self conscious of their bodies. In this scene little make-up is worn, to show the day time relaxation, and her hair is messier than it was when she arrived at her holiday destination.

A lot of different paces of editing are used, not only to set the scene but also to fit in with the storyline of the video and with the beat and sounds in the music. When the ‘clubby’ music sections are playing, the editing is a lot faster paced with different clips cutting between each other, however slower paced editing is used for sections such as when the girl dives into the sea. These two types of editing are close together in one section of the video and they contradict each other but also complement each other. These different types of editing will attract to the target audience as youths have the well known feature of becoming bored easily, this means that the audience will stay engaged and relate to the video better. Another type of editing includes a superimposed image. This is shown when the girl dives into the sea, Tinie Tempah starts singing again and as this is happening the image of him and the girl are one on top of the other. This is an interesting feature that youngsters will find appealing. During the video we see a lot of shot reverse shot clips, this enables the target audience to be viewing both Tinie Tempah and the female at once, in effect.

Finally, different types of shots and camerawork are used. Sections of the video are filmed through CCTV, this relates to the modern day youths as the media portrays them as being up to no good, and these actions are all caught by CCTV cameras, as well as being filmed through CCTV cameras, then sounds are heard for them. There is an establishing shot to show the scene, in this shot the road sign for Miami is shown, this shows that they are in a different country, which lots of youngsters will experience. Other shots include close ups on Tinie Tempah’s mouth whilst he is singing the lyrics previously mentioned (black bm and white tt). Furthermore, at the beginning of the video at the airport, and long shot is shown, showing the young girl walking towards the camera arriving at her holiday destination.

This video relates to the target market I intend to aim at because the lyrics used relate to the modern day young generation. The locations relate to where youngsters would want to go on holiday, for either a relaxing time or for a clubbing holiday. The costumes relate to both the location and the trends of today.
